Community Music Center to Celebrate 90th Birthday on October 16, 2011
Public invited to an afternoon of free performances, workshops and festivities

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA, August 30, 2011) — To celebrate 90 years of making music education accessible to the Bay Area, Community Music Center will host a birthday party and open house for the public on Sunday, October 16 at its Mission District Branch.

Party-goers will enjoy an afternoon of free musical performances and hands-on activities. From 2-6pm, there will be continuous concerts showcasing CMC faculty, classes and workshops: choruses, chamber music groups, a wind ensemble, a jazz jam, Latin youth ensembles, and percussion troupes. The school will also host workshops in its 1870’s era building, including an instrument petting zoo, music for kids demonstrations, a sing along, as well as Feldenkrais techniques for musicians and other body work demos.

There will be refreshments and, of course, a birthday cake. Everyone is invited to join Community Music Center for a cake cutting ceremony with special guests at 3:45pm that day.  This is also an opportunity to meet CMC’s new executive director, Christopher Borg.

At 7pm that evening, Community Music Center’s Latin-Flamenco ensemble Potingue will complete the celebration with a free, all-ages Latin dance party.

“Community Music Center is proud of its 90-year history of making music accessible to the people of the Bay Area, and looks forward to the next 90. We’d like our community to know that this is their music center and that everyone is welcome here. It is never too late to learn how to make music. You are invited to try something new and to celebrate great music making with us on October 16.” – Stephen Shapiro, Executive Director.
