Children’s Chorus
Young singers: find your voice and learn to blend it into a group by singing in CMC’s Children’s Chorus! You will develop basic ear training, sight singing and performance skills in an environment that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork and fun. In addition to presenting three theme concerts each year, the Children’s Chorus performs in Spanish at CMC’s “Posarela” celebration each December.
Ages: Children ages 8-12
Instrument: Voices of all ranges
Musical Styles: Popular, jazz, multicultural folk, showtunes, originals
Prerequisites: A strong desire to sing and families committed to supporting their children’s experience
Class size: Maximum 25 students
Location, Days and Times: Mission District Branch, Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-5:30pm
Class does not meet during the summer

Tuition: None. $40 annual registration fee.

Family Music
This is a mixed-age music class for infants to 3 year olds and parents/caregivers – a musical bonding experience and an introduction to singing, rhythmic activities, movement and musical play. Each child participates at his or her own level, and the adults sing, move and play along with the children. Rhythmic rhymes and songs from many folk traditions for one-on one finger plays with your child, or group singing and dancing in a circle. More than one adult can attend with a registered child.
Ages: 0-3 years old
Instrument: Voice and percussion instruments provided by CMC

Music for Children
This group class helps kids develop musicianship through rhythm games, songs, creative movement and the use of Orff instruments, which are designed to give a successful musical experience to all beginning musicians. Students will be introduced to symphonic instruments and experiment with the way their sounds are produced. They will also learn popular songs from around the world.
Ages: Children ages 4-7
Instrument: Unpitched and pitched percussion (provided), voice
Prerequisites: None. Late registration with instructor’s consent.

Piano for Kids
This is a great introduction to music fundamentals on the keyboard in preparation for private lessons on piano or any other instrument. Basic musical concepts such as note reading, rhythm and piano technique will be taught through fun and imaginative activities. Children will also learn to play simple songs on the piano. Since students will be expected to practice at home, they must have access to a keyboard or piano.
Ages: Children ages 6.5-8

String Orchestra for Children
This ensemble is for children who would like the experience of being part of an orchestra at an early stage in their playing. We will play easy tunes and rounds for one, two and three voices.
Ages: 6-11
Instrument: Violin, viola, cello
Musical Styles: Rounds, children songs, and classical easy pieces
Prerequisites: Minimum one year of private instruction, or teacher’s permission. Twinkle, Twinkle or D major scale, 1 octave.
Class size: 6-10 students

Teen Chorus
Teens: if you love to sing and perform, CMC’s Teen Chorus is for you! Singers will have a chance to learn more about vocal and performance technique, harmonizing, and basic note reading while learning a varied repertoire. The chorus will work on a program to perform in concert.
Ages: Teens
Instruments: Voices of all ranges
Musical Styles: Popular, jazz, folk, and Cabaret tunes in 2, 3 and 4-part harmony
Prerequisites: CMC Children’s Chorus or other choral singing and/or instructor’s consent
Class size: 3-15 students

Teen Jazz Band
Play in a jazz band and learn to improvise, swing, and balance a group sound playing standard forms and tunes. Students will also work on intonation, tone quality, rhythmic accuracy, shaping a musical phrase through articulation, dynamics, and the use of accents and sforzandos. The band will put on winter and spring performances at CMC.
Ages: Teens
Instruments: Trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass and drums)
Musical Styles: Jazz, rhythm and blues, funk, Latin jazz
Prerequisites: Strong interest, proficiency on an instrument and mastery of scales. Admission with instructor’s consent.
Class size: 14-22 students
Location, Day and Time: Mission District Branch, Saturdays, 2-4pm

Tuition: No tuition or registration fee
