Young Musicians Programs

In addition to offering financial aid for all of its classes, Community Music Center runs three comprehensive programs for youth.

Comprehensive Musicianship Program (CMP)
Inner City Young Musicians Program (ICYMP)
Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP)

Comprehensive Musicianship Program (CMP)
The CMP provides current CMC private instrumental lesson students with free theory/musicianship and ensemble classes for the academic year. It offers students an integrated curriculum that includes multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists and performance opportunities throughout the year.

Ages: 9-18

Instruments: All

Musical Styles: Classical, jazz, popular

Prerequisites: Currently enrolled in CMC private instrumental lessons for a minimum of 1 year. Admission is by recommendation from the CMC private lesson instructor and audition during the spring.

Class size: 40 students working in smaller groups

­­Inner City Young Musicians Program (ICYMP)
The ICYMP is a tuition-free program that provides students with weekly free private instrumental lessons, theory/musicianship and ensemble classes for the academic year. It offers students an integrated curriculum that includes multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists and performance opportunities throughout the year. In collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District, this program focuses on serving middle school and high school students from low-income San Francisco households.

Ages: 12-18

Instruments: All

Musical Styles: Classical, jazz, popular

Prerequisites: Admission based on both need and merit, by recommendation from the student’s school music teacher, and audition during the spring.

Class size: 30 students working in smaller groups

Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP)
The MDYMP is a tuition-free program that provides students with free weekly private instrumental/voice lessons, theory/musicianship and ensemble classes, and the opportunity to experience multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists. The curriculum emphasizes Latin music, both popular and classical. Students will perform at CMC in December and June, and will have additional performance opportunities off-site throughout the year. In collaboration with the San Francisco public schools and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, this program serves 7th-12th graders who live or study in the Mission District.

Ages: 12-18

Instruments: All and voice

Musical Styles: Latin (classical and popular)

Prerequisites: Minimum two years playing an instrument or singing. Admission based on both need and merit. Auditions during the spring; other audition dates to be arranged.

Class size: 25 students working in smaller groups

Group class: Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, Saturdays from 10am-Noon
