Financial Aid
Community Music Center believes that financial status should never be an obstacle to musical study. CMC offers various financial aid options. Starred discounts cannot be combined.
Sliding scale discount*: Based on household size and monthly net income. Verification documents are required and students must re-apply annually. To apply, submit the Sliding Scale Application (LINK) at registration. Applications are available at either branch.
Private lesson/group class discount*: All tuition for group classes is reduced by 50% with concurrent enrollment in private lessons, except for Music for Children and Piano for Kids.
Work-study: Work exchange for course credit is available for students over 18 who wish to earn tuition reduction. Continuing students preferred. Availability is limited.
Free classes: The Children’s Chorus is tuition-free, and Teen Jazz Band is completely fee-free.
Senior discount*: Seniors aged 65+ can receive a 50% discount on full tuition.
Household discount: Each additional person from the same household enrolling in private lessons or group classes will be given a discount of $1.50 per lesson or class. There will be no additional discounts for those already paying minimum tuition.
Scholarships and scholarship programs: A limited number of full scholarships for private lessons are awarded to students age 18 and under based on financial need and merit. Other scholarship programs include Comprehensive Musicianship Program, Inner City Young Musicians Program, and Mission District Young Musicians Program. Auditions are generally held each spring.
Discount instrument rental: A quarterly rental fee of $35 (with an additional $25 refundable deposit) is due at the time of rental. Instruments must be returned at the quarter’s end unless other arrangements are made with the registrar. Limited availability.
